About this deal

Family, sibling rivalry, fertility, infidelity, domestic violence, narcissism and finding happiness were a few of the subjects which were intertwined throughout the story. Mothers and Daughters had it all, from families, friendship and trust to conflict, domestic abuse, control and secrets. These are my own honest and considered opinions that are uninfluenced by any other reviews or publicity. She and her husband have been trying to start their family but, after almost a year, nothing has happened.

They had become an inconvenience and it seems as though the author didn’t really know what to do with them. Naomi loves her two girls, but when she meets an old friend it upsets the equilibrium and, although they think they know everything about their mother, Naomi, like most of us, has her secrets – and she’s not the only one. Naomi has recently been widowed and is trying to rebuild her life in the little village of Tilsham by the sea. With thanks to HQ Digital and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Mothers and Daughters, the latest novel by Erica James, is a contemporary family drama packed with plenty of secrets, lies and romantic misadventures. But as the story unfolds, and the layers peel back, revealing secrets from deep in the family’s past, it becomes easier to empathise with Martha. Although I found there was a certain degree of predictability in the storyline in this family saga, I thought that all the characters were well-portrayed and, with the gradual revelation of long-held secrets as the. Her characterisation is excellent, the setting beautiful and the slow reveals are delicately and sensitively handled.

The author also convincingly captured the range of emotions and tensions which can arise when a widowed parent begins a new relationship, only to find their happiness threatened by disapproval from adult offspring. While Willow had always had great empathy, was a good listener and had no ambitions other than to enjoy life. Martha and Willow are her 2 daughters, both very different in character but dealing with their own issues along with the grief of losing their father. This is a wonderful family saga and Erica James has the ability of getting to the heart of families with an honesty I’ve long admired. The last 20% turns a bit more gritty, you do feel a storm cloud on the horizon, so it’s predictable and requires nothing more than a rain Mac and a huddle with a loved one under a tree to weather it out. The cover was the first thing which made me want to read it and it is the perfect introduction to the beautiful story. My twenty-fifth novel - A Secret Garden Affair - was published in the spring of 2023 and is my second book to be published by HQ Stories. All three women have ghosts they must lay to rest but she’s the one most in need of a strong resolution.
